Wiltshire Council Agree Budget for 2011/12
I sat in the longest ever recorded Council Meeting to agree the budget for the following year. The meeting lasted over 12 hours but it was worth it to get the Budget agreed. Despite a reduction of 28% in funding from central Government, Wiltshire Council is in very good shape financially (unlike many other local authorities.) The main aims are to protect the vunerable, invest in services and keep the Council Tax low. Key decisions include: Council tax to be frozen for 2 years, £52m investment to help vunerable adults, £4.7m investment for vulnerable children, £15m investment in superfast broadband, increase spend on highways to £12.2m, collecting plastic and cardboard from doorsteps. Wiltshire Council is reviewing how every service is delivered to ensure you receive a fast, cost effective response whenever you contact them.
Wiltshire Council was formed on 1 April 2009 and replaced the four district councils and the old Wiltshire County Council. It is based at Trowbridge with other offices across the co and improving Devizes leisure centreunty. It is led by Councillor Jane Scott OBE (Conservative).
